St John’s Church Girls Take Basketball League
The “SSS” Class at St John’s Church School were winners of the Wolfville Girls’ Basketball League in the mid-1910s. Although the young women in the photograph are not identified, Violet Sleep appears to be in the upper left of the photo, while Marjorie Wickwire, later a star at Acadia University is in the middle holding the basketball. While the date of the photo is not known nor are the names of the other teams in the league, the fact that there was a league speaks to the interest that the girls and young women of Wolfville had in basketball circa 1916.
