BARA (Borrow Anywhere Return Anywhere)

Nationwide Access to Library Resources / CURBA

Acadia University faculty, students and staff have Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges at most Canadian universities. This ground-breaking initiative, negotiated by the four Canadian regional library consortia, provides access to over 90 million volumes and significantly expands the availability of higher education information resources for faculty, students, and staff alike.

Borrowers will be subject to the regulations of the lending library and are expected to return items to the lending site if not within the Atlantic Scholarly Information Network libraries.

CAUL Borrower's Card

This reciprocal borrowing card issued by the Council of Atlantic University Libraries/ Conseil des bibliothèques universitaîres de l'Atlantique (CAUL/CDBUA) and accepted at university libraries throughout the Atlantic Provinces and now at most Canadian university libraries. If you are faculty, staff or a student at Acadia, complete this form to apply for a CAUL card. Return the completed, signed form to the Access Services Desk in person, as an attachment by email to access-circ@acadiau.ca, or by fax to 902-585-1748. Your card will be ready for pick-up by noon of the following business day. Distance education students may request that a CAUL card be sent to them by mail.

CAUL/CURBA Borrowing Privileges

You must present both your CAUL card and your current Acadia ID in person at the lending (host) library in order to borrow their materials. Reciprocal borrowing privileges are determined by each lending library. Loan periods may differ from those available at the Vaughan Library. Some library materials such as periodicals, videos, and books on course reserve may not be available for loan. Other library services may be available and some fees may apply. Inquire at the host library regarding services available to CAUL card holders.

Graduate students, faculty and staff are entitled to borrowing privileges at all participating libraries. Undergraduate students may borrow from most participating libraries. The University of Toronto, Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and Quebec university libraries do not lend to undergraduates from other institutions or provinces. Your CAUL/CURBA card is for use at other university libraries. For borrowing at Acadia you will need your Acadia ID.

Access to Electronic Resources Licensed to the Lending Institution

Most license agreements currently in place accept the principle that walk-in traffic is a natural part of library service. Therefore, in most libraries you visit you will find the electronic resources available to patrons in the library regardless of affiliation. In most instances, remote access from your home or office is limited to the faculty, staff and students of the contracting library.

Returns

Materials borrowed using your CAUL/CURBA card from libraries within the CAUL Network may be returned to either the library from which you borrowed them or to the Vaughan Library.

As a member of the Nova Scotia Borrow Anywhere Return Anywhere (BARA) initiative, all Nova Scotia residents may return their materials to any public, NSCC or university library.

If you borrow from another Canadian university library outside the Atlantic region, you will be expected to return items to the lending institution.

Fines and Charges

If you incur a fine or lose a book charged to your CAUL card, it is your responsibility to follow the regulations of the lending library and settle the matter. Note that you are responsible for following the local regulations and these may differ from those at the Vaughan Library. In order to make the CAUL borrowing card possible, all libraries have agreed to be responsible for charges and fines levied against their users by other participating libraries when these have been incurred in the course of using the CAUL card. This means that an individual from Acadia may have borrowing privileges suspended or other actions taken at the Vaughan Library in order to satisfy a charge or fine incurred on an CAUL card at another institution. As a last resort, the CAUL card will be canceled.
