What book made you grow?

Traplines by Eden Robinson

I read Traplines when I was an undergraduate at the University of Alberta. This is the first book that Eden Robinson published and it is a series of short stories that draw you into characters’ worlds with the contrast between humour and darkness, resilience and cynicism that she is now well-known for.

Reading this book inspired me to grow because I began to recognize the craft of writing: How the actual words on the page shape our experience of a story. It just clicked for me, how Robinson used certain words to inspire certain feelings, and how withholding and providing details about the characters changed readers’ imaginations and expectations of a story. More than this (and this attests to the power of Robinson’s writing), the stories in Traplines resonated with and reflected my life in Northern Alberta, even though I inhabited different worlds than her characters.
