Francis Gilbert Mouzar

Mouzar Top Scorer

A native of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Fran Mouzar went to Horton Academy where he was a sports star. Entering Acadia, he continued to be active in sport, both varsity and interclass. He was a member of his class teams for baseball, basketball, track and hockey.

On the varsity basketball team as a freshman, he combined “an aggressive style of play with an uncanny scoring ability.” In his sophomore year, when Acadia played in the Halifax City League, he was selected to the league’s all star team. In 1942, captain Mouzar and his team mates defeated the Halifax Navy team and the Sydney Navy team to take the Provincial Intermediate title; Mouzar was a high scorer in each of the games. He received his athletic “A,” distinction citation and blazer for his work on the basketball team.

Mouzar also played rugby and again demonstrated an aggressive style and an ability to score. Of a fall 1941 game, the Athenaeum reported: “Mouzar, who at last has found time for football in his crowded timetable, was the star of the game. He scored the winning try and added a lot of pep to the scrum.” In his senior year, playing in the city league against teams from the services, Mouzar was a scoring leader and in two games scored the only try. Acadia won the City League that year.

He was know for his skill in baseball, both during university and after. He played right field for Acadia’s varsity team and for the Liverpool Larrupers, winners of numerous Nova Scotia senior championships. Mouzar graduated with a BA in 1944 and a BEd in 1946. He was a teacher and principal at several schools on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, and concluded his career as Superintendent of Schools for Queens County, Nova Scotia.
