Acadia University Women’s Basketball Team 1908

Spirit Triumphs Over Clumsy Clothing

The women of Acadia’s 1908 basketball team played under conditions that today’s players would consider unreasonable, including the bulky clothing that effectively restricted movement on the court. Rules of the “women’s game” also meant that fast breaks and end-to-end play were impossible. Lacking an intercollegiate league, the women pictured here played “friendly” or non-league games against town teams or other Acadia women’s teams. One game during the 1908-09 school year had women students resident at Acadia playing women students who lived at home and attended university. The members of the team are not identified by name.
