Ground Hockey Girls Conquer Kings
Ground hockey was a major sport for women by the 1940s. There was both a varsity team and an intermediate team, indicating both strong interest among the women athletes and support from the university. The October 4 1949 Athenaeum reported that the “Ground Hockey Girls took up their positions on Raymond Field for their first practice on Thursday afternoon.” Speculating on the team’s chances for a good season, it noted “although the Varsity team has lost many of its last year’s star’s graduates from the intermediates have stepped into their respective places and, as a result, it appears that this year’s team will equal the playing skill of the teams from previous years.” In November, the Athenaeum reported that the team defeated King’s College 6 to 4.
