High School Tops KCA for Title

Wolfville High School had an excellent hockey team during the 1928-29 school year. In a 4-2 win over Windsor Academy early in the season, “the teams were evenly matched and the game was keenly contested throughout....for Wolfville the stars were Oliver on the forward line and Hutchinson and Sanford on defence.” That win put Wolfville’s record at 2-0.

Wolfville High’s hockey team continued to play well during the season and in late February won the playoff series over Kings County Academy of Kentville to claim the Valley League High School title. In that series, “the outstanding player on the ice was Billie Oliver, who, although he did not figure in the score column, played a style of hockey which made itself felt at all times, not only in puck carrying but interference as well. Cohen in the net played a spectacular game and time and time again made what appeared to be impossible stops.”

In late March the team travelled to Dartmouth to play an exhibition game against Park High School. Wolfville won 6-2 with captain Neil Sanford accounting for three of the goals, Lloyd Shaw for two and William Oliver, next year’s captain, for one.
