Horton Captures Calkin Shield

The Horton Academy football team won the Valley senior championship during the 1943 season. They beat Kings County Academy of Kentville 4 to 0, King’s Collegiate of Windsor 10-8 and the Acadia Freshmen 3-0. As described in the Athenaeum, “Horton Academy captured their first Valley interscholastic championship in fifteen years at Raymond Field on Friday when they defeated King’s Collegiate 18-0. The Calkin Shield, after remaining in Kentville for 15 years, with the exception for one years when King’s took possession, will be brought back to the Acadia campus.” In this photo, they are shown on the Acadia campus, University Hall in the background; captain Wasson is holding the Calkin Shield.
