Goliath Brings Luck Acadia Claims Championship

The 1912 Acadia University football team was photographed with its mascot–15-year old, five foot three inch Acadia freshman Donald Forsythe. The post-season write-up in the Acadia Athenaeum, described him: “Forsythe. Freshman. Weight, infinitesimal. Called “Goliath” for short. Great source of good luck.”

Apparently “Goliath was good luck--the team was successful. Defeating both Mt Allison University (NB) and the University of New Brunswick in convincing fashion, Acadia won the King-Richardson trophy during the 1912 rugby season. Challenged by the Halifax Wanderers, who claimed to be Eastern Canadian champions, Acadia travelled to Halifax on November 16. The hard fought contest ended with a 15-0 Acadia victory. Writing in the Athenaeum, Charles Chipman proclaimed: “Acadia now claims the championship of Eastern Canada.” During the season, the team out-scored their opponents 69 to 3.
