Horton Collegiate Academy Rugby Team 1898

Rugby Football

Horton Beats College Men

The names of the players on the Horton Collegiate rugby football team of 1898 are unknown today; however, the man with the cane is the coach, E. N. Rhodes. Most of the players are wearing the canvas vest and pants typically worn by rugby players of the era. We do know they took football seriously and practice was held daily. “Besides the regular daily football practice on the campus some exciting match games have been played. On October 16 the Academy team defeated a team from Chipman Hall by a score of 11-0; and the following Saturday won from the freshmen, after a hard game, score 6-0.”
