Acadia Team Shows True Sportsmanship

The 1902 Acadia football team was looking forward to its October game against a town team from Truro. However, that team refused to play Acadia because there was a “coloured” man on the team. Although William White, the man in question, offered to withdraw, his teammates refused. The Athenaeum commented: “...when true athletic merit gives Mr. White the honor of a place on the football team, no such narrow view prevails and hence the game cannot be played.” The Acadia men may have missed a game, but they demonstrated the true meaning of sportsmanship and team solidarity, and “upheld the honor of the Red and Blue.” The team was 2-2-1 for the season.
