Co-eds Take the Plunge

By the late 1920s, swimming was a popular sport at Acadia University, and, unlike many, it was open to men and women on an equal basis. After 1928, except during WWII, there were usually both men’s and women’s teams that competed against other college teams and within the university. In November 1947, the Athenaeum announced tryouts for the interclass swim teams. It also announced that events for women in the winter 1948 meet included 20 and 40 yard freestyle, 20 yard back stroke, 20 and 40 yard breast stroke, a medley relay, an 80 yard relay and diving. The race shown here is from the women’s interclass meet of 1948. The unidentified women are diving into the pool at the start of the 20 yard free-style event. Coach and Athletic Director Fred Kelly is in the background.
