Acadia Takes Mt A 14-2 in Tennis

Tennis was a popular sport in the Wolfville area in the 1930s; both university and town tennis teams played matches with other clubs in the immediate area as well as from other parts of the Maritime provinces. The 1932 Acadia University tennis team, pictured here, had mixed results in their varsity matches. Gertrude Phinney and Harlan Cox had won the fall 1931 singles titles during the Acadia intramural competition and were valuable members of the varsity team, regularly winning their matches in competition. On 10 October 1931, they defeated the team from Mt Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, 14-2. Later in October, the team lost to Dalhousie University of Halifax, 10-5, although both Phinney and Cox won their matches. Many of the players on Acadia’s team also played for the Wolfville Lawn Tennis Club.
