Theodore Kierstead Stackhouse

Stackhouse Standout Hockey Star, Coach

Born in 1894, Ted Stackhouse attended Acadia Collegiate Academy where he was a star on the hockey team, playing as a “rover.” He entered Acadia University in 1913 and once again, was on the hockey team. He started out playing rover, as he had at the Collegiate. However, as the Athenaeum reported in its March 1914 issue, in the game with Nova Scotia Technical College on 24 Feb 1914, he played left wing. “Stackhouse showed up much better on the wing than he did as rover.” He continued to play on the wing for the rest of the season, though in some games he played right wing. During the next season, Stackhouse was a major force on Acadia’s team. in a game against King’s College (NS) on 3 February, “Stackhouse played best game for Acadia,” while in a return game on 24 February, “Stackhouse scored the first [goal in the second period] in an end to end rush....”

Stackhouse left Acadia before graduation, and played three seasons of hockey with the New Glasgow, Nova Scotia Cubs. During the 1921-22 hockey season, he played 17 games with the Toronto St Pats, including four games in the Stanley cup playoffs. He returned to Nova Scotia, playing with several other provincial clubs, including the Amherst Ramblers. In the early 1920s he coached several Wolfville area teams, including Acadia University’s hockey team. In 1921, the Athenaeum commented: “At the beginning of the new year the material out for hockey was raw indeed. The improvement shown as the season progressed is greatly due to the effort of Coach “Ted” Stackhouse.” In 1925 they reported that “Six hours per week the boys are chasing the puck under the direction of “Ted” Stackhouse as coach.” He also coached the Wolfville High School team. He also played on pick-up teams in Wolfville, including a game between Wolfville businessmen and Acadia staff.
